How big is your God?
Being in the presence of Mount St Helens on May 18, 1980, as the mountain erupted, must have made area residents feel pretty small in the face of its power.
The Mount St Helens eruption equaled to 1 atomic bomb detonating per second for 9 straight hours. That’s a continuous blast of 540 atomic bombs. And the Mount St Helens eruption was small compared to other eruptions in earth’s history.
While visiting the Mount St Helens Creation Center–the only creation-based volcanic exhibit on the Mount St Helens Hwy–the Adventure Days co-op learned about the power of the eruption and about the power of God. Bill Hoesch, geologist and Director of the center, shared with the group how the eruption gives credibility to the Biblical creation story. It is true, God created the world and everything in it–including you.
Just like the earth has hidden power inside of it, you have hidden power inside of you. While Mount St Helen’s expression of power was destructive, your expression of power can be life-giving.

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time. – 2 Timothy 1:6-9
God has given you power to love–and to love again. May you erupt with God’s power every day!
Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” -Matthew 17:20-21.
The center also has a dinosaur exhibit, which we were also able to tour!
