Neil Nedley, MD is a practicing physician in Internal Medicine with an emphasis in Gastroenterology, Mental Health, Lifestyle Medicine, and the difficult-to-diagnose patient. He developed the highly successful 10-day residential Depression Recovery Program for treatment resistant depression and anxiety.

  1. Depression is an epidemic. Each successive generation has had more depression. It is so common now that it is the number one cause of disability worldwide. Have you or a loved one suffered from depression?

  2. What are the nine symptoms of depression? 1) Deep sadness or emptiness, 2) Apathy, 3) Weight or Appetite Changes, 4) Agitation, 5) Sleep Disturbances, 6) Lack of Concentration, 7) Feelings of Worthlessness, 8) Morbid Thoughts, 9) Fatigue

  3. Minor depression requires how many symptoms to be present? 2 of 9 symptoms.

  4. How many symptoms need to be present for major depression? Major depression requires 5 of 9 symptoms to be diagnosed.

  5. Depression increases the risk of mortality, creating a huge financial loss and adversely affecting relationships. What is the solution to this disease? It depends on the causes of depression.

  6. There are 10 different causes of depression. If you experience four of the underlying causes, you are susceptible to depression. What are the causes? 1) Genetics, 2) How we are raised, 3) Lifestyle, 4) Sleep-Wake cycles, 5) Addiction, 6) Unhealthy nutrition, 7) Toxicity in the body, 8) Social/Complicated Grief, 9) Poor medical condition, 10) Frontal lobe suppression.

  7. How many of these causes are reversible? Eight are reversible.

  8. What can you do to win the fight against depression?
